No? OK. Well, these nine “American Idol” contestants are ready, including Huntsville’s Paul McDonald. The quirky singer faced a close call last week as part of the Bottom Three in which two others were sent home.

This time, the man onstage took on the Man in Black, Johnny Cash.

• We say: High energy, maybe not our favorite version of the song, but should be enough to keep him out of the Bottom Three again.

Alabamian Paul McDonald competes on
the 10th season of “American Idol.”

The lead singer of the Grand Magnolias has a bigger gig in 2011.

Paul McDonald performs weekly in front of a national audience as a finalist on “American Idol.” The Fox reality show offers the winner, based on audience votes, a recording contract.

McDonald was born in Auburn and graduated from Huntsville High School. The 26-year-old Nashville resident has released three albums with the Magnolias and its previous incarnation, Hightide Blues.

Huntsville’s Paul McDonald will compete
in the Top 13 on “American Idol.”

During the first five seasons of “American Idol,” you could hardly see an episode without someone from Birmingham belting out a tune. Champions Ruben Studdard and Taylor Hicks and runner-up Bo Bice made it through three seasons of competition.

But the recent five seasons have been Alabama free. Until now.

Auburn native Paul McDonald will be part of the Top 13 on the 10th season of “American Idol.” The Fox reality competition features singers as young as 15 performing for viewers’ votes, with the winner receiving a recording contract.

In case you’ve tuned out, the show has brought in new judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler (so long, Simon Cowell) to team with Randy Jackson and host Ryan Seacrest. The competition show will air at 7 p.m. Wednesdays, and the results will air at 7 p.m. Thursday on Fox 6.

McDonald, 26, graduated from Huntsville High School and performs with his band the Grand Magnolias, formerly Hightide Blues, based in Nashville. McDonald’s parents live in Huntsville.

He advanced from the group of 24 contestants with Rod Stewart’s “Maggie May,” and also performed “Blackbird” by the Beatles and “Tutti Frutti” by Little Richard in earlier rounds. The singer has also released three albums, including this year’s self-titled” The Grand Magnolias.”

McDonald has also been active in social media, originally on Twitter as @thePaulMcDonald with nearly 10,000 followers, and now tweeting from his mandated “Idol” account at @PMcDonaldAI10, the first of this season’s contestants to reach 5,000 followers.

The Grand Magnolias has its own Facebook page.

McDonald breaks a four-season drought for Alabama on the top-rated show. He spent the day sleeping in and preparing to see the premiere of “Red Riding Hood.”

His first round of finals competition begins Wednesday.

In December, Huntsville a cappella group Committed won “The Sing-Off,” NBC’s reality singing competition. Fairhope native and former Auburn head cheerleader Krista Klumpp has been competing in this season of “Survivor: Redemption Island.”

Review at a glance: “Supernanny” Jo Frost works with the Phelps in Hayden to help them discipline the kids without resorting to spanking.

I’ll admit it: I have a slight crush on Supernanny, a k a Jo Frost. She just has a way of saying “Birmingham” and “naughty spot” in her British accent that slaps my tickle. I might even follow her into hell and back, or in this case, Hayden.

Back in May, Jo came to visit the Phelps family to tape a sixth-season episode of “Supernanny,” which aired Friday. The ABC reality show visits families in need of parental training. This was her first visit to Alabama.

Amy and Jimmy Phelps are at odds. She’s a stay-at-home mom, and he works outside of the home. They have three boys: Jacob, 9; Brody, 5; and Aiden, 2 1/2.

And like any three boys, they’re a handful. They eat junk food, they talk back and they’re rambunctious. Amy’s solution? A good old-fashioned spanking. Or 12.

Jimmy and Amy don’t see eye to eye on a lot of things, including the spankings. He’d rather find another way to discipline the boys, while she feels it’s an effective tool.

Jo makes it clear that her bag of tricks doesn’t include spanking. But throughout the episode, Amy resists the challenge to try timeouts instead of spankings.

But it wouldn’t be “Supernanny” if Jo’s patience and chiding don’t win out in the end. Along the way, we’re treated to couple’s drama, too, as we see how Amy and Jimmy argue more than listen.

Jo has the family set rules for children and parents.

Jimmy comes off as the sometimes naive, sometimes passive dad. Amy comes off as the frustrated wife and mom.

Jo insists that Aiden start sleeping in his own bed, which lays bare Amy’s pain. She had been using her baby boy to fill an emotional hole, even as he needed to sleep on his own.

We’re also treated to a reboot of family meals, as Jo tells Amy she’s lazy for not fixing proper meals; the kids usually do prepackaged lunches, and then, only the dessert. The boys help choose and make a balanced dinner. Yes, okra, too.

In the end, it appears Amy has begun, reluctantly, to use timeouts whenever the boys misbehave. Jimmy says he feels more confident as a father.

It was a typical episode, but one that raises questions about whether corporal punishment really works, and if parents have alternatives.
